Sir M Visvesvaraya is considered the first engineer of India for his vital contribution to the field of
engineering and education. He is regarded as the greatest nation-builders who played a crucial role
in constructing dams, reservoirs, and hydro-power projects of modern India.
Furthermore, The Government of India awarded ‘Bharat Ratna’ to M. Visvesvaraya in the year 1995.
He was also awarded the British knighthood by King George V, and hence has the title “sir.”
This great personality established our beloved college, Government Engineering College in
Bengaluru in 1917, which was later renamed as University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering to
pay him tribute.
It is the fifth engineering college to be established in the country and first in Karnataka. UVCE is one
of the few technical institutions in the country that is vested with the status of a university and
autonomy on the lines of IITs. It is one of the oldest technical institutions in the country, imparting
technical education leading to B.Tech., B. Arch., MTech, M. Arch. and PhD degrees in the various
disciplines of Engineering and Architecture. The college is approved by the AICTE and the
Government of Karnataka.
With 100 years of heritage and legacy, creating some of the brightest minds known not only in the
field of engineering but also in various other career paths such as acting, defence etc., we the
students of UVCE have a lot to be proud about.
Although in the past few decades, UVCE has lost its original flair and refinement, let’s hope the
state’s decision to make our college autonomous on the lines of IITs helps bring back the glory and prestige of UVCE.
